Best First Cars in the UK, June 2026
Our June 2026 round-up of the best first cars in the UK for new drivers, ranked from our own data on insurance group, running cost, reliability and safety. The ranking held stable for the second month running, and the Fiesta has the deepest used stock right now.
Each month we rank first cars, scoring insurance group, running cost, reliability and safety together. Here is the June 2026 picture.
June is when a lot of UK teens pass their driving test. The summer test-sitting window runs through to August, and for many people reading this, the licence is fresh and the search is just starting. That context matters for what the data is telling us this month.
The Skoda Citigo held the top spot for the second month running at an estimated £259 a month all in, with an insurance group of 2. The ranking did not shift from May: the same six cars, in the same order. Two months of stability at the top of a volatile used market is worth noting, and the reason the ranking held is less about luck than structure. A 1.0-litre supermini with a group 1 or 3 rating stays cheap to insure regardless of what used car prices do in any given week. That is the kind of car this list is built around.
One thing worth flagging this month: the Ford Fiesta has the deepest used stock of anything on the list, so it is the easiest to find. If availability matters, and it does when you need to move quickly, the Fiesta 1.1L at group 5 is the most findable car here right now.

Volkswagen Polo 1.2L petrol
A group-1 insurance rating on the entry 1.0-litre is about as low as it gets, and the cabin feels a class above most superminis, so it never feels like a starter car.
- Insurance group
- 4 of 50
- Running cost
- £281/mo est.
- Price range
- £2,295 to £5,595
- Reliability
- 75/100
- Safety
- 5 star Euro NCAP
- Economy
- 50.5 mpg
Watch out Buy the 1.0-litre. The 2.0-litre GTI is a hot hatch that sits in a far higher insurance group, the exact mistake this list exists to stop.
Toyota Yaris 1.3L petrol
The hybrid sips fuel in town and Toyota reliability is hard to beat, so the monthly total stays low even as prices for the car hold up.
- Insurance group
- 7 of 50
- Running cost
- £306/mo est.
- Price range
- £3,995 to £7,995
- Reliability

- Safety
- 5 star Euro NCAP
- Economy
- 56.7 mpg
Watch out The hybrid is the pick. Avoid the GR Yaris, a 250bhp rally-bred car that shares little but the name and costs a fortune to insure young.
