How Much Does a First Car Cost Per Month?
A first car's real monthly cost is insurance, fuel, road tax and servicing added together, not the finance or purchase price alone, and it's typically £250 to £300+ a month once all four are counted.
Most budgeting for a first car stops at the price of the car itself. That’s the smaller half of the number.
The purchase price is a one-off. The running cost repeats every month for as long as you own the car, and it’s usually the bigger commitment over a year.
The detail
For a low insurance group first car, for example a Volkswagen Polo 1.0L petrol in insurance group 1, insurance runs at around £134 a month for an 18-year-old driver, with fuel, road tax and servicing bringing the all-in monthly total to around £250.
Move up to a group 20 car, for example a Peugeot 208 1.2 PureTech in that group, and the same four categories add up to around £331 a month for a 17-year-old: roughly £215 insurance, £83 fuel, £17 road tax and £16 servicing, even though the car itself doesn’t have to cost any more to buy.
The four categories that make up the total:
- Insurance: usually the single biggest line for a new driver, and the one most affected by the car itself (see does the car you buy affect insurance?)
- Fuel: depends on the car’s real-world economy and how many miles you actually drive
- Servicing and MOT: routine maintenance, tyres and the annual MOT once the car is old enough to need one
- Road tax: set by the car’s registration date and emissions, from £0 for some older or electric cars up to a few hundred pounds a year for others
None of these four move independently of the car you choose. A cheap-to-buy car with a big engine and a high insurance group can easily cost more per month, all in, than a slightly pricier car that’s cheap to run.
What this means for your first car
Budgeting by purchase price alone is the single most common mistake in first-car shopping. Two cars at the same asking price can have monthly totals £50 or more apart once insurance, fuel, tax and servicing are all added in, and that gap repeats every month.
First Car Scout shows the full monthly total, insurance, fuel, tax and servicing together, for every car in a shortlist, so you’re comparing what you’ll actually pay, not just the sticker price.
