Pass · Theory test
What should I do about the theory test now?
Prepare for multiple choice and hazard perception together. You must pass both parts, and you must pass theory before booking the practical driving test. Revision can run alongside lessons and private practice.
Car theory test
Two parts. Two separate pass marks.
Multiple choice
43 / 5050 questions in 57 minutes. Three questions relate to a short video scenario.
Hazard perception
44 / 7514 clips containing 15 developing hazards. Earlier correct responses score more.
Passing one part is not enough. If either part is failed, the full test must be taken again.
Official GOV.UK and nidirect details checked 2026-07-07.

How will revision fit into the week?
Practise interactively with Theory Prep, or build a printable revision schedule around your week.
Revision should change real driving
The useful question is not only “Can I remember the answer?” It is “Can I recognise and apply the rule while driving?” Connect Highway Code topics to lessons and use private practice to notice signs, road position, stopping distance and developing hazards in context.
Great Britain and Northern Ireland use different booking guidance
The test structure and pass marks shown above are the same, but use the correct official service for the region. For England, Scotland and Wales, use GOV.UK theory-test guidance. For Northern Ireland, use nidirect theory-test guidance.
