Learn · Private practice
Can a parent supervise private driving practice?
Yes, if the supervisor, learner, car and insurance all meet the rules. Check those four things before driving, then plan practice that matches what the learner is ready to do—not what the supervising adult finds easy.
Before the engine starts
Four checks, in this order
- 1Supervisor
Age, licence duration, vehicle entitlement and no current ban.
- 2Learner
Valid provisional entitlement and the relevant age and eyesight conditions.
- 3Insurance and car
Cover for this learner in this car, policy conditions, tax, MOT, roadworthiness and plates.
- 4Suitable session
A calm route and skill level agreed with the learner and, where possible, their instructor.
Private practice should support lessons
Use private practice to repeat skills the learner has already started with an instructor. Ask what they want to practise, avoid introducing conflicting instructions, and stop if either person is stressed, tired or unable to stay calm.
The supervising driver is not just a passenger. They must be able to spot risk early, give clear directions and keep the situation within the learner's ability.
Insurance is a separate check
Meeting the legal supervisor age does not prove the insurance policy allows that person to supervise. Some policies impose their own minimum age or other conditions. Check the policy wording or ask the provider before the first session.
Great Britain and Northern Ireland are separate
For England, Scotland and Wales, use the DVSA supervisor guidance. For Northern Ireland, use nidirect learner rules. The Supervisor Checker keeps the rule sets separate and records when its sources were checked.
Frequently asked questions
Who can supervise a learner driver?
The supervisor must be at least 21, have held a qualifying full licence for at least three years and be entitled to drive the type of car being used. Regional rules and insurance conditions still need checking.
Does a learner need insurance for private practice?
Yes. The learner must be insured to drive that specific car. The arrangement differs depending on whether it is their own car or someone else's, and the policy may set conditions for the supervisor.
Can a parent take a learner onto a motorway?
Not in Great Britain. Learner motorway driving is limited to an approved driving instructor in a dual-control car. Private practice can include suitable non-motorway roads within the learner's ability.
Is Northern Ireland different?
Some rules and wording differ. In Northern Ireland a vehicle displaying L plates is limited to 45 mph. Use the Northern Ireland option in the checker so GB and NI rules are not mixed.
