Vauxhall Corsa vs Volkswagen Polo for First-Time Buyers
Both are sensible first cars in ordinary trim, but they suit different priorities. The Corsa is the cheaper buy and has more real inventory to choose from. The Polo carries a full 5-star Euro NCAP rating against the Corsa's 4, and its cheapest trim technically undercuts the Corsa's (group 1 vs group 2), but its GTI also tops out at a higher, more extreme group than anything in the Corsa range.

The catch
The two badges cover surprisingly similar insurance territory in ordinary trim (Corsa group 2-9, Polo group 8-10), so day-to-day running cost is close. The real gaps are elsewhere: the Polo is the pricier buy outright (£11,000-£19,000 against the Corsa's £7,000-£12,300), and it carries the better safety rating. At the extremes, both badges hide a genuine trap: the Polo's GTI reaches group 32 (a real quote: £617 a month standard cover), while the Corsa's GS Line and turbo trims climb to group 15-28. Neither badge alone tells you the insurance cost; the exact trim does.
